As part of BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, the provincial government is investing $6.8 million to fund an additional 1,424 trades seats at 14 public postsecondary institutions throughout British Columbia.
Funding will be provided to students in financial need who are training in some of the top 60 in-demand trade jobs listed in B.C.’s 2022 Labour Market Outlook (e.g. steamfitters, heavy-duty equipment mechanics, carpenters, welders and millwrights).
These new seats are part of British Columbia’s response to an anticipated demand for trained workers in skilled trades and technical occupations. The province is expecting one million job openings by 2022, driven mostly by retirement and economic growth in the province.
Practitioners working with individuals who are considering a career in the skilled trades may find this information useful in helping their clients explore upcoming career opportunities.
